2015 Rugby World Cup Winner

Special Guest

Regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of world rugby, the New Zealand fly-half Daniel William Carter retired from international rugby in 2015 after a glittering career in the famous All Blacks jersey.

Born and bred in the tiny country town of Southbridge in the Canterbury province, between his first cap in 2003 and his last appearance in the triumphant 2015 Rugby World Cup final, Carter played 112 tests for the All Blacks, winning the IRB world player of the year award on three occasions, in 2005, 2012 and 2015. The first player in history to reach 1500 points in international rugby, he holds the world record as the highest scorer of all time, with an incredible total of 1598 points for the All Blacks, far ahead of his closest rival, the Englishman Jonny Wilkinson (1246).

One of only three New Zealanders to have played in four Rugby World Cups (2003, 2007, 2011, 2015) Carter is a highly skilled all-rounder, able to play either at fly-half or inside centre. As proof of his all-round value on the field, in the World Cup final at Twickenham he not only scored 19 of his team’s 34 points, including a crucial drop-goal and a 50-metre penalty goal in the dying phases. But he also had the highest work rate on defense, putting in even more tackles than his illustrious team-mate Richie McCaw.

Unsurprisingly elected best player of the World Cup final, Carter claimed the same honour eight months later with an equally impressive performance in the colours of Racing 92, the French club he joined in November 2015. Guiding his new team to their first Championship title since 1990, kicking five goals from six attempts and scoring 17 of his team’s 29 points, Carter was once again designated ‘Man of the Match’, in the French club final against Toulon.

Dan Carter is married to Honor, a former New Zealand hockey international. They have two sons, Marco and Fox.

French sailor (Brittany)

Jury President of the Book Prize

Anne Quéméré was born in Quimper, Brittany, where she grew up. She was about 20 when she moved to the United States and settled down first in Louisiana, then in New York where she gave lectures for 10 years.

In 2000, she came back to her homeland, Brittany. She started training in rowing and finally decided in 2002, she would go across the Atlantic Ocean, rowing solo and without assistance. She travelled from Canary Islands to the West Indies and completed her crossing in 56 days, breaking the women’s world record. It did not take her long before she decides on another challenge and right after coming back to Brittany, she planned another odyssey: rowing the North Atlantic ocean solo and without assistance. She left Cap Cod (USA) mid-June 2004 and reached Brittany’s seashore 87 days later after experiencing rough weather conditions. She broke once again the women’s world record. Then, in 2006, she crossed the North Atlantic but this time by kite boat (a 6 meters long prototype pulled by a kite). It took her 55 days to kite solo across the ocean. This trip was a world’s premiere.

In the summer of 2010, she joined an expedition in Greenland. The goal was to raise awareness among the general public of ice floe destruction. A year later, Anne Quéméré aboard her kite boat sailed across the Pacific Ocean, solo and without assistance. This 78 days journey was again a world’s premiere. When she is not alone in the middle of oceans, Anne Quéméré spends most of her time writing articles, sharing her travels, giving lectures or talking about concerning topics such as the future of our planet.

Paralympic champion

Jury member of the Golden Podium
Richard Whitehead is a world record holder in full and half marathons, but he’s also one of the world’s best sprinters – and the current European, Paralympic and World Champion in the T42 200m. As a double leg amputee, life is full of challenges, but that’s never got in Richard Whitehead’s way…Since that first marathon in 2004, Richard has run more than twenty marathons, not to mention competing at the 2006 Winter Paralympic Games in sledge hockey. In 2009, he became the first leg amputee (single or double) to break the three-hour mark for a marathon, a world record he has now lowered to 2 hours, 42.54 minutes. He also broke the half marathon world record with an incredible run of 1 hour, 14.14 minutes.

Richard won Gold in the London 2012 Paralympic Games in the T42 200m.

Richard’s aspirations are far bigger than just winning races. To prove that even though he has a disability, he has overcome barriers that have been put in front of him. Following gold medals at the IPC World Championships and Anniversary Games (200m T42), Richard completed the challenge of a lifetime – running 40 marathons in 40 days, from John O’Groats to Land’s End in the United Kingdom. He ran a total of 977 miles for his two chosen charities, Scope and Sarcoma UK.

In September 2016 at the Rio Paralympics, Richard Whitehead defended his 200m Paralympic gold with a dominant performance and secured a silver in the 100m, an event that is not his primary focus making Rio 2016 a storming success.
